Australian finance icon Tom Piotrowski has been poached by another company after more than 24 years providing market commentary at CommSec.

Considered one of the most famous faces in finance news for his trademark beard, the economist, 58, will now spearhead NAB Private Wealth and nabtrade’s financial market commentary.

Starting in early January 2026, Piotrowski will deliver daily insights to help inform high-value clients and all customers, according to a statement released by NAB on Friday.

The finance guru has spent over two decades helping Australians make sense of the markets with his mix of clarity, expertise, wit, and a touch of flair.

‘I’ve always believed finance doesn’t have to be boring, so I aim to make sense of the markets in a way that’s accessible for the seasoned investor, the first-time stock buyer and everyone in between trying to do better financially for their families and futures,’ Piotrowski said.

‘I’m delighted to be joining a bank and team that is so focused on customers and delivering the service, products and insights to support their financial needs.’

NAB Private Wealth Executive Michael Saadie said: ‘Tom isn’t just a market expert. He brings a mix of credibility, charisma, and connection with customers and investors.

‘We’re thrilled to have him joining the team as we invest in delivering leading, timely and actionable insights to customers supported by leading service and capability.’

The high-profile TV economist made headlines in February last year when he was rushed into surgery after he fell from a roof while trying to ensure his house was bushfire ready.

The former CommSec market analyst appeared on Sky News where host Peter Stefanovic noticed he was wearing a protective guard over his left wrist.

‘It’s on the mend Pete,’ Piotrowski said when asked if his wrist was okay.

‘Did you have a motorbike accident?’ Stefanovic asked.

‘I fell off a roof. I’m quite fortunate to be upright,’ the economist replied.

Piotrowski explained he was getting ‘bushfire ready’ and that sometimes that ‘came with a cost’.

‘I’m very fortunate to have wonderful medical care so a shoutout to my wonderful surgeon, thank you very much for all the work you’ve done, I’m very fortunate,’ he added.

Piotrowski has been giving his insight into the market on various news platforms for more than 10 years.

His fanbase has ballooned over the past decade after he debuted a new look with long hair and an unkempt beard.

There is even a Tom Piotrowski Appreciation Society group on Facebook.

The economist first came to TV fame in the early 2000s as a regular guest on Channel 10’s Rove Live.

Prior to his television appearances, the Sydney-based economist was a trader in the fixed income and currency markets.
