The DFA encourages residents to warn family and friends to ensure they are aware of the scam.

The DFA recommends against providing Social Security numbers, banking details or tax account credentials. It says to avoid engaging in the correspondence in any way.
The release says the messages may appear to come from a government agency or taxing authority, but are not legitimate. They may suggest that immediate action is required to obtain the money.
The DFA says it will not send a text requesting sensitive or financial information. It urges all taxpayers to remain cautious, verify the source of any communication before taking action, and rely only on official state and federal websites for tax information and services.
