Bitcoin or Solana: Which Doubles First?

    September 10, 20266 Mins Read

    Quick Read

    • Bitcoin needs to climb from $78,565 to $157,130 to double, while Solana only needs to rise from about $103 to $206.

    • Standard Chartered’s $250 base-case Solana target already clears the $206 doubling point, while its $100,000 Bitcoin target remains well below the $157,130 level needed for a 2x gain for BTC.

    • Solana looks more likely to double first, but the call depends on continued ETF inflows, a stronger Bitcoin price and the timely rollout of its major upgrades.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) is trading around $78,565, so it would need to reach $157,130 to double. That would put it well above its current record of $126,198. At the current price of about $103, Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) would need to reach $206, a level SOL has traded near before.

Bitcoin needs to break into uncharted territory to reach a 2x gain, while Solana only needs to reclaim a price it has reached before. So, which one has the better chance of getting there first?

What Catalysts Could Help Bitcoin Double From Here?

Bitcoin’s catalysts run more on institutional buying and the broader liquidity environment than on anything happening on the network itself.

Spot Bitcoin ETF Demand Staying Dominant

Spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $986.9 million during the week ending September 4, according to SoSoValue, more than the Ethereum, Solana, and XRP funds took in combined. When new money flows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, the funds need to acquire Bitcoin to back the new shares, creating additional demand for BTC

If that pace holds or grows through 2027 and 2028, steady buying against a shrinking supply of new coins is the clearest path to a much higher price, since Bitcoin’s daily new supply from mining is small and shrinks further after each halving.

    A Break Above Bitcoin’s Old All-Time High

Bitcoin’s all-time high of $126,198, set on October 6, 2025, remains above today’s price. When Bitcoin trades above that level, it removes the price band where long-term holders who bought near the top are most likely to sell just to break even, since a coin at a new record has no overhead sellers waiting to exit at breakeven.

Bitcoin has historically moved fastest right after clearing a prior high, because the move removes that resistance and leaves the coin trading where no one holds a loss to sell out of. If Bitcoin sets a new ATH price, the coin increases the chances of doubling its current price.

A Shift From Fed Rate Hikes to Rate Cuts

The odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September rose to about 60% following the September 5 jobs report. If the Fed instead moves toward cutting rates later in 2026 or in 2027, lower borrowing costs typically push investors toward higher-risk assets such as Bitcoin, the same dynamic that has driven past Bitcoin rallies.

While current data points the other way for now, a reversal in Fed policy would remove one of the clearest risks standing between Bitcoin and a much higher price.

What Catalysts Could Help Solana Double From Here?

A bright, neon blue and white wavy line with an upward-pointing arrow on the right signifies a rising trend. The background is a dark, blurred gradient of deep blues and purples, suggesting a digital or futuristic cityscape.

Solana’s catalysts run through its own network upgrades as much as through outside buying, which sets it apart from Bitcoin’s more demand-driven case.

The Alpenglow Upgrade Cutting Finality to 150 Milliseconds

Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade targets a reduction in transaction finality, the time it takes for a transaction to become permanent and irreversible, from about 12.8 seconds down to roughly 150 milliseconds.

Solana having a faster, more reliable finality makes the network more usable for payment and trading volume rather than just speculative trading, and that kind of usage tends to support a higher price over time rather than fade the way a single rally does.

    Growing Institutional ETF Adoption

Per SoSoValue data, Solana’s spot ETFs have pulled in about $1.36 billion in cumulative inflows since launching in October 2025, far behind Bitcoin’s ETF totals but still enough to draw institutional buyers. Roughly 30 institutions, including Goldman Sachs and Electric Capital, held a combined $540 million in Solana ETF exposure earlier this year.

Solana’s ETF base is so much smaller than Bitcoin’s that the same dollar amount of new institutional buying would move Solana’s price by a larger percentage than it would move Bitcoin’s, giving Solana more room to double on similar fresh demand.

    Standard Chartered’s Solana Price Prediction

Standard Chartered’s base case has Solana reaching $250 by the end of 2026, and its bullish scenario reaches $350, both already above the $206 level Solana needs to double from today’s price.

Standard Chartered ties its Solana prediction to Bitcoin reclaiming $85,000 first, since Solana and other higher-risk crypto assets tend to need a stronger Bitcoin before they can sustain their own rallies.

Bitcoin or Solana: Which One Is More Likely to Double First?

Standard Chartered’s base case for Solana, $250 by the end of 2026, already clears the $206 mark Solana needs to double, and its bullish case at $350 clears it by a wide margin. Bitcoin’s most recent named target from the same bank, $100,000 by the end of 2026, falls well short of the $157,130 Bitcoin needs to double, even with Standard Chartered noting that figure could prove too low.

Solana’s smaller ETF base also means the same dollar of new institutional buying moves its price further in percentage terms than it would move Bitcoin’s, and Solana has two concrete network upgrades, Alpenglow and Firedancer, targeting specific 2026 timelines rather than open-ended demand alone.

Our view would change if Solana’s ETF inflows keep falling the way they did this past week, when net inflows dropped 96%, or if Bitcoin fails to reclaim $85,000, the level Standard Chartered ties its Solana target to. It would also change if Alpenglow or Firedancer slip their expected 2026 timelines. Conversely, if Bitcoin’s ETF demand keeps growing well beyond Solana’s, Bitcoin could close the gap faster than any analyst target currently suggests.
