Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Indian equity markets fell for a third straight session on Wednesday, with the Nifty slipping below 23,500 and closing at 23,432, down 204 points. The Sensex declined 813 points to 74,764. Both indices ended at their lowest levels in three months as Brent crude crossed $100 a barrel.
The sell-off was broad-based, with 38 of the 50 Nifty stocks ending lower. IT stocks were the biggest laggards, with Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Wipro and TCS among the top Nifty losers.
Nifty Bank fell 482 points to 56,296, while the Midcap index declined 323 points to 62,593.
Insurance stocks also saw a sharp decline despite healthy August data. HDFC Life fell 4%, while HDFC Bank remained weak, declining nearly 2% to end at a 52-week low.
On the other hand, Adani Enterprises was the top Nifty gainer, rising more than 5% on a report of fundraising by Adani Airports. Adani Ports gained 3% after an order win for Paradip Port.
Power-related stocks also saw buying, with Adani Power, BHEL and Torrent Power among the top gainers. Jindal Stainless, Paytm, Swiggy, Cummins and Nalco were among the top midcap gainers.
Coforge closed off its lows but still ended 5% lower following the resignation of its chairman. Most realty stocks declined, with Lodha and DLF among the top losers.
