Bitcoin holds support as S&P 500 stalls ahead of Fed decision

    September 8, 20263 Mins Read

Bitcoin is clinging to the $78,000-$79,000 range after sliding from recent highs near $82,000. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 is consolidating between 7,700 and 7,718. Both markets are waiting for clarity on inflation before the Federal Reserve makes its September 16 rate decision.

    The inflation gauntlet ahead

The Producer Price Index lands on September 10, followed by the Consumer Price Index on September 11. Those two reports will effectively write the script for the Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for September 15-16.

The last CPI reading, covering July, came in at 3.4% year-over-year. That’s well above the Fed’s 2% target. Markets are currently pricing in a 58-59% probability of a 25 basis point rate hike at the September meeting.

August’s nonfarm payrolls number added 162,000 jobs, a figure strong enough to keep the labor market narrative firmly in the “resilient” column. For the Fed, that combination of sticky inflation and solid employment is the kind of data that makes rate cuts feel very far away.

Bitcoin’s golden zone under the microscope

Technical analysts have zeroed in on Bitcoin’s current price action as a test of the “golden zone,” a Fibonacci retracement area that tends to act as strong support during pullbacks. For Bitcoin, that zone sits right around the $78,000-$79,000 level where it’s currently trading.

A sustained break below $78,000 would put the $76,000 level into play as the next major support. That would represent a roughly 7.3% drawdown from recent highs.

The S&P 500’s historically tight range

The S&P 500’s consolidation between 7,700 and 7,718 represents an 18-point band, translating to roughly 0.23% of total value. The index closed the previous week at 7,718.60, essentially pinned to the top of its current range.

    What to watch this week

PPI on Wednesday sets the tone. CPI on Thursday either confirms or contradicts that tone. Then the market has three trading days to digest the data before the Fed convenes on Monday, September 15.

For Bitcoin holders, the bull case is straightforward: if inflation data comes in cooler than expected, the probability of a rate hike drops and the $82,000 highs come back into range. A hot inflation print hardens rate hike expectations and likely sends Bitcoin testing below $78,000.
