Europe’s satellite launch ambitions take off as German rocket reaches orbit By Investing.com

    September 5, 20262 Mins Read

Investing.com — German startup Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Arctic Norway on Saturday, marking the first commercial flight to reach orbit from continental Europe, Reuters reported.

The uncrewed rocket lifted off from Norway’s Andoeya Spaceport carrying five small satellites and an in-flight technology experiment. Spectrum is designed to transport small and medium-sized payloads.

The successful mission represents a major advance for Europe’s commercial launch industry as governments seek greater autonomy in accessing space and a larger share of the growing satellite launch market.

Norwegian Industry and Commerce Minister Cecilie Myrseth said the ability to launch satellites from Andoeya strengthens Norwegian and European security amid geopolitical uncertainty.

Saturday’s flight was Isar’s second launch attempt. Its first Spectrum rocket crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from the same facility in March 2025. No one was injured, and the company said the mission provided valuable development data.

The latest flight served as both a qualification mission for Spectrum and its first launch carrying payloads.

Europe is seeking to build domestic launch capabilities in a market that includes SpaceX and France’s ArianeGroup, the Airbus (EPA:AIR) and Safran (EPA:SAF) joint venture that operates from French Guiana.

Norway also faces competition from Sweden’s Esrange facility and Britain’s SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland as European countries invest in launch infrastructure.

Isar last week secured about €200 million ($232 million) from the European Space Agency to support new rocket development and expand testing and launch infrastructure. The Bavarian company is also developing a second launch site in Canada.

The successful Spectrum mission strengthens Europe’s efforts to reduce its reliance on overseas launch facilities as satellite demand and the strategic importance of independent access to space increase.
