Stock Market Highlights: Markets traded mixed at the halfway mark of the last trading session of the week, with the Nifty holding around 90 points higher and eyeing the 24,000 mark. The Nifty Bank index was also higher, reaching the 58,000 level, while Wipro, Trent and IndiGo were among the top gainers.
The Sensex closed at 76,515, while the Nifty gained 24.25 points to end at 23,898. The Nifty Bank fell 10.95 points to 57,370, while the midcap index declined 156 points to 63,079.
Capital market stocks remained in focus, with BSE gaining nearly 9% over the last two sessions following SEBI’s update on CAS. Cable and wire stocks saw sharp declines, with KEI Industries falling over 8% following UltraTech’s entry into the segment.
Life insurance stocks also remained in focus, with SBI Life emerging as the top Nifty gainer. HAL rose nearly 3% following an update on GE Aerospace engine deliveries, while HEG gained 3% on the last day to be eligible to own the demerged entities.
Physics Wallah surged over 5% on a large trade and a positive brokerage note, while Dhoot Transmission rose over 1% following its Q1 results. ESDS Software had a bumper debut, more than doubling over its issue price.
Prestige Estates ended nearly 2% lower following an MREAT order in the Mahalaxmi Tower project case. New India Assurance surged 17% and IFCI gained 5% amid reports that SEBI was likely to approve NSE’s IPO next week.
MCX gained 3% amid expectations of a SEBI circular on allowing FPIs in commodity derivatives in September. The Nifty Metal index emerged as the top sectoral performer, with Tata Steel rising nearly 3%.
Market breadth favoured declines, with the advance-decline ratio at 1:1.
