Bitcoin miners turned data center operators are surging today, but the rally reveals a strange disconnect: these stocks still chase the coin even as billion-dollar AI lease deals rewrite what these companies actually are.
Quick Read
-
Cipher Mining surges 12% and TeraWulf 8% in a catalyst-free oversold bounce after each shed more than 20% over the prior month.
-
DTCR rises just 2% and SPY 1%, both far behind the miners, placing today’s rally in speculative rather than broad sector territory.
-
TeraWulf earns 71% of its revenue from HPC and holds a 20-year Anthropic lease worth ~$19 billion, yet its stock still trades on Bitcoin.
Bitcoin-linked data center operators are rebounding today as Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) stabilizes near recent lows, and none of the intraday moves trace to a fresh company announcement. The group carries its old mining identity into every session even as the underlying businesses evolve toward AI infrastructure. That gap between what these companies now sell and what their share prices respond to defines the trade.
The framing sits in the benchmarks. The Global X Data Center & Digital Infrastructure ETF (NASDAQ:DTCR) is up 2% to $27.87, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up 1% to $774.02. Both funds sit well behind the individual miner moves, which places today’s rally in the speculative corner of the data center theme rather than across the sector broadly.
Cipher Mining (NASDAQ:CIFR) stock is up 12% to $17.08, retracing part of a steep monthly drawdown. Meanwhile, TeraWulf (NASDAQ:WULF) stock is up 8% to $15.95, the middle mover in the group and the name that already gets most of its revenue from something other than mining. IREN (NASDAQ:IREN) stock is up 4% to $41.14, the smallest of the three moves and the least bruised name entering the session. As for Bitcoin itself, it trades at $81,204.22, up 5% over the past 24 hours.

Oversold Bounce Meets a Steadier Coin
No fresh company-specific announcement from Cipher Mining, TeraWulf, or IREN accounts for today’s session. All three began as Bitcoin miners and still trade with that association, more or less, so the group tends to move with the cryptocurrency on days that lack a corporate catalyst. Today’s gains follow a steep drawdown across the past month in two of the three names.
Cipher Mining stock was down 37% over the past month through the prior close, so a 12% bounce recoups only a portion of that ground. TeraWulf stock was up 29% year to date and down 21% over the past month through the prior close, capturing a strong 2026 gain that gave back significant ground into August. IREN stock heads into the day less battered on the monthly view, which helps explain why its snap-back looks more modest than the other two.
Revenue Mix Has Already Moved Past Mining
The group trades on an identity it has partly outgrown. TeraWulf drew $31.9 million, or 71%, of its $44.8 million Q2 2026 revenue from high-performance computing rather than mining, and its largest commercial commitment is a 20-year Anthropic lease covering 401 megawatts with roughly $19 billion of initial contracted revenue, extendable to roughly $33 billion. That’s the same AI data-center demand we mapped through its power, cooling, and networking suppliers in a free report on seven picks-and-shovels names. Anthropic is a private company, so the counterparty risk sits inside a deal not marked to any public share price.
TeraWulf ended the second quarter with about $3 billion of cash and restricted cash and approximately $2.7 billion of net debt, so the backlog is contracted revenue that still has to be built and serviced before it becomes cash. Short interest settlement data showed 107.16 million TeraWulf shares sold short at the August settlement date, equal to 25.5% of the reported float and 3.44 days of average volume. That positioning mechanically amplifies upside moves in the shares in a way it wouldn’t in a lightly shorted name.
Cipher Mining and IREN shares don’t trade with the same short-interest torque, though the underlying HPC pivots follow a similar shape. At Cipher Mining, the Black Pearl campus is delivering initial HPC capacity and an $810 million bond offering at a 6% coupon fully funds the Stingray site, part of a portfolio targeting roughly $793 million of average annualized net operating income. IREN operates $1 billion of AI Cloud annual recurring revenue and targets $4 billion of contracted ARR operational by December 31.
What to Watch Next
The DTCR ETF’s smaller gain and the broad market’s smaller gain still place this rally in the speculative corner of the theme rather than across data center infrastructure generally. Traders can watch for signs that Bitcoin’s stabilization holds, since the group’s short-term direction still follows the coin more than the multi-billion dollar lease backlogs at TeraWulf, Cipher Mining, and IREN. Earnings catalysts are now behind all three names, so cryptocurrency direction and execution updates are the next legible triggers.
Investors should size their positions to survive the volatility in their exposure to this theme. A name that trades with a cryptocurrency and carries roughly a quarter of its float on the short side can retrace fast in either direction, and the contracted revenue that anchors the long-term case is still years away from arriving as cash on the income statement. Today’s gains, while noteworthy, don’t materially alter that timeline.
