Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Says Bitcoin Could Soar as High as $400,000 By 2030. Here’s Why That’s Going to Happen.

    August 28, 20263 Mins Read

Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase (COIN -6.33%), recently claimed Bitcoin (BTC -3.84%) could soar as high as $400,000 by 2030 in a Fox Business interview. That would mark a gain of more than 400% from its current price of about $78,000. These four catalysts could drive it to that target over the next four years.

    1. The passage of the CLARITY Act

The CLARITY Act, which aims to establish a clear federal framework for regulating digital assets, is currently in limbo in the U.S. Senate. Conflicting opinions regarding stablecoin yields, public disclosures of crypto holdings, and other controversial issuers are stalling its progress.

But once the CLARITY Act is finally signed into law, more institutional investors will likely accumulate Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin will also be explicitly defined as a digital commodity and placed under the sole jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), thereby permanently shielding it from regulatory threats posed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

    2. Milder macro headwinds

Bitcoin pulled back from its record highs last year as expectations for interest rate cuts shifted to rate hikes. That shift — driven by inflation, the Iran war, and other messy macro headwinds — pushed many investors away from cryptocurrencies and into safer investments. But if those headwinds dissipate over the next five years, the crypto market will warm up again.

    3. The next Bitcoin halving

More than 20 million of the maximum supply of 21 million Bitcoins have already been mined. Every four years, its mining rewards are halved, and it becomes more difficult to mine profitably.

Its next halving in 2028 will further throttle its production. That catalyst could drive Bitcoin back above its previous all-time high of $126,000 and attract even more investors.

    4. The U.S. debt crisis

Bitcoin’s scarcity and hard supply limit make it comparable to gold and other precious metals. That makes it a great hedge against the rising U.S. national debt, which recently reached $40 trillion and boosted its annual interest payments above $1 trillion.

The only way the U.S. government can pay off that interest is by issuing more debt, which traps it in a cycle of increasing its money supply, cutting interest rates, and capping its Treasury yields to prevent the Treasury market from crashing. That cycle will debase the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar and make Bitcoin more attractive.

    Is $400,000 a realistic target?

At $400,000, Bitcoin would have a market cap of $7.9 trillion. That would still make it less valuable than gold, which is currently worth $31.5 trillion. Therefore, I think that’s a realistic target if you expect Bitcoin to become the “digital gold” of the global economy.
