Trump Media posts a $238m quarterly loss as its bitcoin bet sours

    August 11, 20264 Mins Read

Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent of Truth Social, reported a net loss of $238.1m for the second quarter of 2026, a figure that dwarfs the $20m loss it posted a year earlier and turns the company’s slow drift from social network to crypto holding vehicle into something close to a headline.

Most of the damage came not from running a media business but from watching digital assets fall, an outcome that follows directly from the strategy laid out when Trump Media reported a $405.9m first-quarter loss, almost entirely from crypto markdowns.

The arithmetic is stark. Unrealised markdowns on digital assets and securities totalled $190.4m, within which realised and unrealised losses on bitcoin and pledged bitcoin came to $116.7m, since crypto prices slid over the period.

Against that, the company’s actual operating business looks almost decorative: revenue reached $1.67m, up 89% year on year from $883,300, which is real growth in percentage terms yet a rounding error next to the treasury swings that now define the quarterly numbers.

There is a genuinely brighter reading buried in the release, though, because the loss narrowed sharply from the previous quarter.

The $238.1m shortfall is a considerable improvement on the $405.9m the company lost in the first three months of the year, when crypto markdowns did much the same work.

So the picture is really two comparisons pointing in opposite directions: things got dramatically worse against last year, yet meaningfully less bad against the quarter just gone.

Beneath the paper losses, the bitcoin pile kept growing. Trump Media held 14,139 BTC, including pledged coins, as of 31 July, worth roughly $890.5m at a reference price near $62,982, up from 9,477 coins and about $557m at the end of June.

It topped up in July by liquidating $159.6m of equity securities that had themselves been invested in bitcoin-related products, effectively trading one form of crypto exposure for the underlying asset.

That accumulation is deliberate, since the whole point of a treasury strategy is to keep buying through the dips, though it also means the balance sheet now rises and falls with a single, notoriously fickle price.

The running costs, meanwhile, are the kind a small firm rather than a sprawling empire would recognise.

Legal expenses ran to $25.6m, general and administrative costs to $35.9m, and the business used $13.7m of cash in operations over the quarter. None of that is catastrophic on its own, yet set against $1.67m of revenue it underlines how much of the company is scaffolding around a treasury.

Management’s response is a pledge to grow up. Trump Media announced what it calls a “more disciplined digital asset treasury management framework” intended to dampen volatility while keeping its long-term crypto exposure intact, which is a polite way of admitting the past two quarters have been a rollercoaster.

As part of the tidying, on 7 August it terminated a planned “CRO” treasury venture with Crypto.com, one of several side bets it now seems keen to shed.

The stated goal is a return to the core product, namely Truth Social itself, with the flashier experiments wound down.

That instinct is not new, since the company has spent the year reshuffling its ambitions, from when it dropped a Truth Social spinoff to chase a $6bn fusion merger with TAE Technologies to the moment it reportedly pitched traders a $100,000 feed of the president’s posts.

What the results cannot quite disguise is the mismatch at the centre of the enterprise.

A company that trades under the ticker DJT, describes itself as a media and technology group, and earns less than $2m a quarter is, on the evidence of its own accounts, mostly a leveraged wager on bitcoin with a social network attached.

Whether the new discipline changes that, or simply narrates the next set of markdowns more calmly, is the question the third quarter will answer.
