The race to never close: London Stock Exchange joins global push for 24-hour trading

    July 20, 20264 Mins Read

The London Stock Exchange will launch an overnight trading venue in 2027, joining Nasdaq, CME and Cboe in the global shift towards near 24-hour trading as investor demand for always-on markets continues to grow

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) is set to enter the race towards near round-the-clock trading, unveiling plans to launch a dedicated overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027 as global exchanges rethink traditional market hours to meet rising investor demand.

According to a report by the Financial Times on Tuesday, the new platform will operate independently of the LSE’s main market and will initially offer trading in exchange-traded products (ETPs), including funds that track UK and US equity markets.

The move places London alongside some of the world’s biggest exchange operators that are extending trading hours in response to the rapid growth of cryptocurrencies and increasing demand from retail investors for markets that are accessible almost anytime.

Why exchanges are extending trading hours

For decades, stock exchanges have operated within fixed business hours. But the rise of digital assets, which trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week, has changed investor expectations.

Retail investors increasingly want the flexibility to react immediately to breaking news, earnings announcements and geopolitical events, regardless of the time of day. Advances in trading technology and growing participation from investors across different time zones have also accelerated the push for longer trading sessions.

The LSE’s overnight venue is designed to tap into that shift while strengthening London’s position as a global financial hub.

    Separate venue for overnight trading

The new exchange will operate from 5:00 pm to 7:50 am London time, according to the FT report. It will include a 30-minute pause between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm for end-of-day processing.

The LSE’s main market will continue to trade during its normal hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm London time.

Initially, investors will be able to trade exchange-traded products rather than individual shares, allowing them to gain exposure to broader UK and US markets outside regular trading hours.

Global exchanges are moving in the same direction

The London Stock Exchange is not alone.

Nasdaq plans to introduce 23-hour weekday trading beginning in December. CME Group launched 24×7 trading for cryptocurrency futures and options in late May, while Cboe Global Markets is preparing to roll out 23-hour, five-day-a-week trading for US equities on its EDGX Equities Exchange later this year.

Together, these initiatives signal a broader transformation in global financial markets as exchanges compete to attract investors seeking greater flexibility.

    London’s strategic advantage

LSE Chief Executive Julia Hoggett said London’s time zone gives it a unique opportunity to connect investors across Asia, Europe and North America.

“There was an increasing appetite, particularly from retail investors around the world, to use London given our particular timezone, to gain exposure to not only UK assets but global assets,” Hoggett told the Financial Times.

The city has long served as a bridge between Asian and US trading sessions. Extending trading into overnight hours could make London an even more attractive destination for global investors looking to respond to market-moving events in real time.

    Challenges remain

While longer trading hours offer greater flexibility, they also present operational challenges for exchanges, brokers and market participants. Firms will need to ensure sufficient liquidity, maintain robust trading systems and manage additional staffing and regulatory requirements.

Analysts have also questioned whether overnight sessions will initially generate enough trading volumes to support efficient price discovery, particularly for less liquid products.

Nevertheless, with cryptocurrencies normalising continuous trading and investors demanding greater accessibility, traditional exchanges are increasingly embracing longer operating hours.

The planned overnight venue marks another step in the global evolution of financial markets, where the concept of a stock exchange closing at the end of the day is gradually becoming less relevant.
