    American Bitcoin posts third consecutive quarterly loss amid Bitcoin decline

    American Bitcoin Corp is making a habit nobody wants. The Nasdaq-listed miner just reported a $57.2 million net loss for Q2 2026, its third straight quarter of red ink, as a steep decline in Bitcoin’s price turned its treasury strategy from bold bet into balance sheet burden.

    The company, majority-owned by Hut 8, has now racked up cumulative losses of roughly $198.5 million across the last three quarters.

    The numbers behind the pain

    Bitcoin dropped approximately 22% quarter-over-quarter, and ABTC recorded more than $188 million in fair value declines on its digital assets as a result.

    The Q2 loss of $57.2 million actually represents an improvement over the $81.8 million loss posted in Q1 2026. The quarter before that, Q4 2025, came in at a $59.5 million loss.

    Revenue tells a more interesting story. ABTC pulled in about $67 million in Q2, up from $62.1 million in Q1. The company mined roughly 932 Bitcoin during the quarter, compared to around 817 BTC in the prior period.

    The company has also managed to push its mining cost per Bitcoin down to approximately $36,200, thanks in part to recent equipment acquisitions from Bitmain.

    As of June 30, 2026, ABTC holds a strategic reserve of about 8,002 Bitcoin, built through a combination of mining output and direct purchases.

    Why fair-value accounting is the villain of this story

    The adoption of fair-value accounting for digital assets, which became standard after FASB’s updated guidelines, means companies must mark their crypto holdings to market price every quarter. When Bitcoin rises, you look like a genius. When it falls 22% in three months, you book enormous non-cash losses that dominate your income statement.

    ABTC isn’t alone in this predicament. Reports indicate that even Coinbase has posted its third consecutive quarterly loss.

    What this means for investors

    A $57.2 million loss on $67 million in revenue means the non-cash impairments are swamping the actual business economics by a wide margin.

    For Hut 8, which holds a majority stake in ABTC, the subsidiary’s losses feed directly into its own financial picture. The parent company’s decision to spin out its US mining operations into a separately listed entity was partly a strategic play, partly a bet that American Bitcoin could capture value as a pure-play miner.

    Bitcoin miners with lower reserves on their balance sheets are somewhat insulated from the fair-value accounting pain. Companies that chose to sell mined Bitcoin immediately rather than accumulate it are posting cleaner financials. ABTC’s accumulation strategy, sitting on 8,002 BTC, amplifies both the potential reward and the current punishment.

    At $36,200 per mined coin, ABTC has a viable business as long as Bitcoin trades meaningfully above that level. Another 22% decline would push the market price uncomfortably close to ABTC’s mining cost, turning what is currently a non-cash accounting problem into an actual operational crisis.
