Chinese Commentator Calls Bitcoin a CIA Trap as Iran’s Military Uses It to Bypass Sanctions

    April 17, 20264 Mins Read

    TLDR:

    • Jiang Xueqin, a Yale-educated philosophy teacher, claims Bitcoin runs on CIA-controlled servers.
    • Iran’s IRGC collected roughly $2M per supertanker in Bitcoin fees at a major oil chokepoint.
    • Bitcoin operates across 22,174 nodes in 164 countries with no central server or kill switch.
    • BIP-361, Adam Back’s Paris speech, and Jiang’s viral video all emerged within 17 days of each other.

Bitcoin found itself at the center of geopolitical debate after a Chinese commentator claimed the network runs on CIA-controlled servers.

The claim came on April 15, the same day Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly collected cryptocurrency tolls from oil tankers crossing a major maritime chokepoint.

The two events, unfolding simultaneously, drew sharp attention from the crypto community and raised questions about state-level narratives targeting Bitcoin’s architecture.

Chinese Commentator Challenges Bitcoin’s Decentralization Claims

Jiang Xueqin, a philosophy educator at Beijing’s Moonshot Academy, published a video questioning where Bitcoin’s blockchain servers are physically located.

He pointed to the NSA-designed SHA-256 algorithm, the network’s transparent ledger, and its free release as evidence of U.S. intelligence involvement.

The video spread rapidly across TikTok, X, and YouTube, reaching Chinese-speaking and BRICS-adjacent audiences.

Jiang holds a Yale BA in English Literature and has no formal technical background. He raised the same “CIA operation” framing at least three times in 2026 alone, including a March appearance with online personality SNEAKO.

Despite operating in a country that has imprisoned citizens for far less, Jiang faced no professional consequences for the claim.

Crypto commentator Shanaka Anslem Perera addressed the “servers” question directly on X. According to Bitnodes.io data from April 16, the network runs on 22,174 independently operated full nodes spread across 164 countries. Over 63% of those nodes route through Tor, and no central point of failure exists anywhere in the system.

On April 15, a Yale-educated Chinese commentator named Jiang Xueqin went hyper-viral across TikTok, X, and YouTube asking the question he wanted billions of people to hear: “Where are the blockchain servers physically located?”

The network’s hash rate stands at 1.09 zettahashes per second. Mining power is distributed across the United States at 37.4%, Russia at 16.9%, and China at roughly 12%, despite China’s own ban on cryptocurrency. That distribution alone counters the claim of centralized U.S. control.

As noted by Bitcoin commentator account @bitcoinwell in a post that exceeded 10,000 likes: “A credentialed academic pretending not to grasp this is not ignorance. It is a red flag.”

Iran’s IRGC Collects Bitcoin Tolls as Narrative War Intensifies

While the CIA server theory circulated online, Iran’s IRGC was reportedly collecting approximately two million dollars per supertanker in Bitcoin transit fees at a maritime chokepoint.

That route carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil. The IRGC’s use of Bitcoin reflects the network’s core property: no court order can freeze it.

The timeline surrounding these events spans 17 days. On January 30, OFAC designated Iran’s preferred stablecoin exchanges.

Sixty days later, Iran’s parliament codified the Hormuz Management Plan. On April 8, Iranian officials publicly named Bitcoin as an acceptable toll currency.

On April 14, BIP-361 was formally published, proposing the first consensus-level freeze mechanism in Bitcoin’s history.

The following day, Jiang’s video went viral. On April 16, cryptographer Adam Back took the stage at Paris Blockchain Week to oppose BIP-361’s forced-freeze architecture.

Bitcoin has maintained 17 years of continuous operation without a single consensus breach. Over 1,000 open-source developers contribute to its codebase, and its peer-to-peer structure dates to the 2008 whitepaper. The network’s resilience remains its strongest counterargument to centralization claims.

The convergence of enforcement action, viral narrative, and protocol governance debate across 17 days points to coordinated pressure on Bitcoin from multiple directions at once.
