Urgent property tax warning for thousands of homeowners

    March 24, 20263 Mins Read

Thousands of employees will be shamed in their workplace for not paying their Local Property Tax, as Revenue is about to contact their bosses to claim the unpaid amounts directly from their salaries.

Local Property Tax (LPT) payments have been made for more than 1.9million properties. Revenue states there are returns outstanding for around 390,000 properties. Of those, the LPT estimate has been paid in full, or a payment instruction is in place, for 227,000 properties.

Taking the amount from people’s salaries would work in a similar way to how people pay their income tax and PRSI, which is deducted from wages before they are paid.

Property tax for average homes – worth €437,501 to €525,000 – is €495, so the outstanding amount due from the homeowners who still have not settled their bills is around €80million.

Revenue said yesterday it had reminded property own – ers who have not filed an LPT return as part of last year’s revaluation process ‘to do so now’.

Revenue’s Katie Clair said: ‘While the majority have filed their return and paid their liability, we are reminding all residential property owners that they were legally required to submit an LPT return to Revenue last November.’

The property valuation submitted through this process determines the LPT charge applicable for each year from 2026 to 2030. Revenue published LPT statistics on Monday as part of its Property Tax Statistics publication.

Revenue is about to begin its annual LPT ‘non-compliance campaign’ for the almost 170,000 property owners who have not filed their return or put a payment in place.

Letters will be sent to property owners at work this week, advising them that they have two weeks to file their return and pay up, or their employer will be instructed to begin deducting the amount from their wages. Further letters to other categories will follow.

Just over 227,000 properties are currently paying their 2026 LPT estimate through recurring payment methods such as direct debit or salary deduction. These property owners still have to file their LPT return and update their valuation band. Failure will result in enforcement action.

Ms Clair added: ‘Now the annual debit instruction date of 20 March has passed, I’d like to thank the 1.4 million property owners who have paid LPT for 2026. A key part of the return is selecting the LPT band that applies to the market value of the property on November 1, 2025.

‘Regardless of whether you have paid in full or have a rollover payment arrangement in place, or even where you agree with the notice of estimate Revenue has made for your property, you still need to file an LPT Return to confirm the correct valuation band. Such property owners now need to make sure that they engage with Revenue and submit their LPT Return.

‘Our LPT compliance campaign starts this week. We are writing to property owners in employment notifying them if they don’t file their return and make a payment arrangement within a fortnight, we’ll instruct their employer to deduct their LPT from their wages.’
