Stock Market LIVE Updates: Sensex, Nifty fall at pre-open, rupee at record low; United Spirits, Persistent Systems, Rallis India in focus

    January 20, 20262 Mins Read

Indian equities are expected to begin Wednesday’s session on a cautious to weak note, tracking persistent global risk-off sentiment, continued foreign fund outflows, and lacklustre earnings cues. After Tuesday’s sharp sell-off, investor confidence remains fragile, with markets struggling to find near-term support amid heightened volatility.

On 20th January, the Nifty 50 slipped below the 25,250 mark, marking a decisive breakdown from its recent consolidation range. Selling pressure was broad-based, with midcaps and smallcaps witnessing deeper cuts compared to frontline indices. Sectorally, IT and financials led the decline, while defensive pockets such as FMCG offered limited protection. The overall market breadth remained decisively negative, reflecting weak risk appetite.

From a technical perspective, 25,350–25,400 now acts as an immediate resistance zone for the Nifty. Sustained trade below this band may keep recovery attempts capped. On the downside, 25,050–25,100 is a crucial support area; a break below this could open the door for further downside toward 24,900–24,800 in the near term.

The Bank Nifty showed relative resilience but failed to reclaim the psychologically important 60,000 level. As long as the index remains below this mark, sentiment in banking stocks is likely to stay cautious. Immediate support lies near 59,100–59,200, while resistance is placed at 59,700–59,800.

Flows continue to influence sentiment, with FIIs remaining net sellers, adding pressure to benchmarks. DIIs, however, continue to provide some support, cushioning sharper declines. The India VIX moved higher, signalling elevated uncertainty and expectations of wider intraday swings.

Overall, markets may see a muted opening with a negative bias on 21st January. Traders are likely to stay selective, focusing on risk management, while investors may await stability near key support levels before committing fresh capital.
