Stock Market Holiday Tomorrow: The Indian stock market will remain shut for trading on January 15 due to the municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra. Both the BSE and NSE have issued revised circulars confirming that no trading will take place across segments on the day.
In its notification, the BSE said trading in the equity segment, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipts will be suspended on January 15. It also clarified that equity derivatives contracts scheduled to expire on January 15, 2026, will now expire a day earlier on January 14, 2026. These revisions will be reflected in the end-of-day contract master files.
The NSE has similarly updated its earlier circular, declaring January 15 a trading holiday for both the capital market and derivatives segments.
This is a change from last week, when the exchanges had only designated January 15 as a settlement holiday, indicating that trading would continue. Settlement holidays are typically announced during elections or major public events when banking and clearing operations are affected. Since January 15 is a public holiday in Maharashtra and most banks are expected to remain closed, the exchanges revised their decision.
Stock market holidays in 2026
With this update, Indian stock exchanges will observe 16 trading holidays in 2026, excluding weekends. January 26 will be the second market holiday of the month.
In the first half of the year, markets will remain closed on Holi (March 3), Ram Navami (March 26), Mahavir Jayanti (March 31) and Good Friday (April 3). Trading will also be suspended on Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14), Maharashtra Day (May 1) and Bakri Id (May 28).
In the second half, markets will be shut on Muharram (June 26), Ganesh Chaturthi (September 14) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). These will be followed by Dussehra (October 20), Diwali Balipratipada (November 10), and Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 24). The final trading holiday of 2026 will be Christmas on December 25.
Stock market on Union Budget day
Separately, the stock market may remain open on February 1, even though it falls on a Sunday, if the government decides to present the Union Budget on that day. An official announcement on this is still awaited.
