Is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve? These are the market hours today, Dec. 31, 2025

    December 31, 20252 Mins Read

U.S. stock markets are open for trading on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025, which is the final trading day of the calendar year. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will operate regular equity trading hours – opening at 9:30 a.m. and closing at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET).

Bond markets and some fixed-income venues typically adjust their schedule on holiday eves. On Dec. 31, 2025, bond trading is set to close early at 2:00 p.m. ET, while stock markets continue through the usual close at 4:00 p.m. ET.

What happens to the stock market after today?

Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026 is a federal holiday (New Year’s Day), and U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed.

Markets are expected to resume normal trading on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, with the standard 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET hours.

    Why do these schedules matter?

The U.S. equity markets follow a set holiday schedule each year. In addition to New Year’s Day, exchanges like the NYSE and Nasdaq observe other closures such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

For most of the year, regular trading hours remain 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, except on holidays and early closure days.
