China is usually seen as a country with densely populated streets, skyscrapers rising against the horizon and technologies like robots. The country is also famous for building its way around obstacles, quite literally sometimes. A video of a ‘nail house’ in the country illustrates how engineers and authorities can find a workaround for almost any situation.

A nail house or dingzihu is a home whose owners refuse to move for property redevelopment projects or accept compensation for their house’s demolition from developers, The Guardian reported. This often leads to authorities building around the houses and leaving them alone. A video of one such nail house has grabbed attention on social media.

The clip, posted on X, shows a small house near a busy road. The building is at odds with its surroundings, which include a parking lot and massive apartment complexes.

“In China, when the owner of this house refused to move for new development, builders made the road curve around it! Homes like this are known as ‘nail houses’ because they stick around no matter what!” the caption read.

Social Media Reacts To Video Of Nail House

Many people were impressed by the clip and commended the authorities leaving the property alone instead of demolishing it. “That’s freedom. In my country that house owner will end up in jail if they defend their land,” one user wrote.

“What is the reason for these house owners to be adamant? I have videos of nail houses occupants living among dusty & dangerous conditions?” one person asked.

Chinese Home Owner Regrets Nail House

In January, the owner of “Jiangxi’s most stubborn nail house” regretted his decision not to sell his property and take the government compensation. A highway has been constructed around his home, the South China Morning Post reported. Three other homeowners near the nail house accepted the compensation and agreed to the demolition of their property.

Tofu vendor Ye Yushou, who owns the nail house, told SCMP he regretted rejecting the government’s initial compensation offer of $220,000 (Rs 1.9 crore) and two homesteads in 2022.
