United Utilities to make Lake District route accessible

    October 28, 20252 Mins Read

An initial cash injection to the tune of £80,000 was secured by the Lake District National Park Authority in 2018 for improvements necessary to make Cogra Moss, a Miles Without Stiles route.

With an enclosed forest nearby and fell summits that boast impressive scenery, it is a popular route for walkers and runners alike.

And people of all abilities including wheelchair users, will soon be able to enjoy the serenity of Cogra Moss thanks to further works set to begin on the route.

United Utilities, the landowner at Cogra Moss, has confirmed that work is set to take place to widen a bridge on the site, making it passable to all, including wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs.

Paul Forshaw, United Utilities’ County Business Lead for Water in Cumbria said: “We always welcome visitors to our sites and we are delighted that the footpath is already being enjoyed by both local residents and visitors contributing to the community and tourism in the area.”

Mr Forshaw said: “We are very grateful for the efforts of Friends of the Lake District, the Lake District National Park Authority and others in helping to bring this project to fruition.

“We are beginning the process to fund and complete work to widen the bridge as part of the Miles Without Stiles project to ensure that everyone in our community can enjoy inclusive access to this beautiful area.”

United Utilities is also taking steps to secure Public Right of Way status for the footpath around Cogra Moss.

Miles Without Stiles routes can be found in national parks across the country, offering all the perks of the countryside, without obstacles to climb over.

In a now approved Partnership Plan, which will guide decision-making in the Lake District for the next 25 years, park bosses set intentions to improve six miles of paths, making them more accessible under the Miles Without Stiles programme.

They also aim to ensure 74 per cent of Miles Without Stiles routes meet the programme’s standard and 65 per cent of the Public Rights of Way Network can be travelled with ease.

Miles Without Stiles routes in Cumbria can be found on the Lake District National Park website.
