    • Columbus Day, also known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, is a federal holiday observed in October.
    • Stock markets like the NYSE and Nasdaq will be open for trading on Columbus Day.
    • Banks and the post office will be closed, but trash pickup schedules vary by location.

Another federal holiday snuck up on us. Columbus Day, also known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, happens every second Monday in October.

Who gets a day off on Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day? What’s open, and what’s closed? Is the stock market open? Here’s what to know.

    When is Columbus Day 2025?

This year, Columbus Day falls on Monday, October 13.

Why is there a Columbus Day? Why is it also called Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

Columbus Day commemorates Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ landing in the New World on October 12, 1492, after his voyage from Europe.

Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not, though the latter is still recognized as a national holiday. The holiday celebrates the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived in America before European explorers arrived.

What did Donald Trump say about Columbus Day?

President Donald Trump’s traditional approach to American history is extending to Columbus Day with a proclamation celebrating Italian explorer Christopher Columbus as “the original American hero” and accusing his critics of slander.

“Outrageously, in recent years, Christopher Columbus has been a prime target of a vicious and merciless campaign to erase our history, slander our heroes, and attack our heritage,” reads the proclamation, which Trump signed Oct. 9 ahead of the Oct. 13 holiday.

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day?

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and bond markets will be open on Columbus Day.

Those markets are typically open Monday through Friday, except on select holidays.

Federal workers will have a day off on Columbus Day

Columbus Day is listed as one of 11 federal U.S. holidays, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

According to the Pew Research Center, federal offices will be closed, and many federal workers will have a paid day off.

Will mail come in on Indigenous Peoples’ Day? Is USPS open on Columbus Day?

Mail is not delivered on federal holidays, so you will not receive your regular mail or packages on Columbus Day.

USPS Priority Mail is the only service in operation.

Will FedEx and UPS have deliveries and pickups on Columbus Day?

Like USPS, other package delivery services, such as FedEx and UPS, may operate in a limited capacity on Columbus Day.

FedEx Office locations will have limited hours the day before, but FedEx Freight and some other services will still be in service. Likewise, UPS Store locations will be open, and pickup and delivery services are also available.

Will banks be open on Columbus Day?

No, banks and their branches will be closed since banks follow the federal holiday schedule.

Bank ATMs and digital banking features will still be in service.

Is there garbage pickup on Indigenous Peoples’ Day? In Columbus, no, but yes in Cincinnati, Canton, Akron

It depends on where you live.

Columbus’ city website provides a trash and recycling calendar showing Columbus Day as a holiday. Upcoming holidays include Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving (Nov. 27), Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

However, Cincinnati’s government web page doesn’t list Columbus Day as a holiday, meaning trash and recycling pickup will happen as scheduled.

Similarly, Akron does not list Columbus Day on its garbage pickup holiday schedule. Trash pickup will likely happen, but check your local service for your holiday schedule on Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Canton garbage pickup will follow a normal schedule on Columbus Day, according to the government website.

Check with your local waste disposal company to verify the trash pickup schedule on Columbus Day.

Will schools be open on Columbus Day?

Most schools will be closed on Columbus Day. However, school closings vary by state and school district. Check your local school district’s website for school closures.
