Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (ETR:HHFA) shareholders have endured a 13% loss from investing in the stock five years ago

    October 21, 20244 Mins Read

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it’s worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But in any portfolio, there will be mixed results between individual stocks. So we wouldn’t blame long term Hamburger Hafen und Logistik Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:HHFA) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 27% over a half decade.

It’s worthwhile assessing if the company’s economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let’s do just that.

See our latest analysis for Hamburger Hafen und Logistik

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Looking back five years, both Hamburger Hafen und Logistik’s share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 27% per year. The share price decline of 6% per year isn’t as bad as the EPS decline. The relatively muted share price reaction might be because the market expects the business to turn around. With a P/E ratio of 50.42, it’s fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

    What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It’s fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik, it has a TSR of -13% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

    A Different Perspective

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik shareholders gained a total return of 2.2% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that’s still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 2% endured over half a decade. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We’ve spotted 2 warning signs for Hamburger Hafen und Logistik you should be aware of, and 1 of them is potentially serious.
