Lubbock Water Utilities Completes Water Service Line Inventory, No Lead Service Lines Found

    October 16, 20243 Mins Read

LUBBOCK, TX (NEWS RELEASE) – The City of Lubbock recently completed a water service line inventory. This inventory is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to providing its residents with access to safe, clean drinking water and to meet state and federal water quality standards.

The City has been actively identifying water service line materials since 2021, and has completed the service line inventory. We are proud to announce the City has no lead service lines. The City’s efforts are guided by the latest scientific research and regulatory standards to ensure public health and safety. For more than a century, the City has provided its residents with high-quality and reliable water services and remains committed to continuing that tradition. This inventory also assists with Lubbock’s compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions.

Originally established in 1991, the EPA Lead and Copper Rule aimed to reduce lead levels in drinking water. With the revised rule, cities are tasked with proactively addressing and mitigating the risks associated with these contaminants, which primarily enter drinking water through the corrosion of plumbing materials and fixtures.

The City is actively implementing strategies to align with the latest regulations and ensure the community’s safety through transparent and informative measures:

    • Development of a Comprehensive Water Service Line Inventory:

The City identified all water service lines throughout the community, and Lubbock is in full compliance as of October 16, 2024. This comprehensive inventory will be updated annually to help us strategize and manage any future projects.

    • Infrastructure Upgrades:

We are investing in modernizing water treatment facilities and distribution systems to reduce potential contaminants.

    • Community Line Identification and Water Quality:

We maintain an effective corrosion control program to minimize pipe corrosion and are proactively working with customers to participate in water sampling at their taps.

    • Regular Monitoring and Testing:

We are enhancing the frequency and scope of water quality testing to identify and address potential contaminants, ensuring compliance with state and federal water quality standards.

The health, economic development, and quality of life in our city are contingent upon a reliable and safe tap water supply. The water leaving the two Lubbock water treatment plants does not contain lead, and the City has not identified any City water service lines containing lead. The City of Lubbock assures our residents that the water remains clean, high quality, and safe to drink. The annual Water Quality Report can be found on the City’s website at www.mylubbock.us/waterqualityreport.
