Salvation Army seeing increase in helping people with utility bills

    August 5, 20242 Mins Read

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The local Salvation Army is seeing an increased need to help people with their utility bills. It comes on top of donations to the Salvation Army being down over the past four years, according to Major Robert Lyle with the Central Alabama chapter.

Lyle tells WBRC they are trying to do what they can with what they’ve got to help as many people as possible pay their utility bills, especially during the hot summer months. Lyle says that’s why it’s important to donate so they can continue helping others when times are tough.

“I know when I go to the grocery store, I’m paying much more than I used to but my income hasn’t increased, and so we have those needs. So folks where they would normally be able to stay atop of their expenses, they’re not able to now. So again, this is the season. It will pass, but we’re thankful for the community that allows us to do this,” Lyle said.

One of the ways you can help is by checking the Project SHARE box on your Alabama Power bill. The money, run by the Salvation Army, directly helps low-income and elderly customers in our communities.
