OUE (SGX:LJ3) shareholders have endured a 16% loss from investing in the stock five years ago

    July 23, 20244 Mins Read

Ideally, your overall portfolio should beat the market average. But every investor is virtually certain to have both over-performing and under-performing stocks. At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in OUE Limited (SGX:LJ3), since the last five years saw the share price fall 26%. Even worse, it’s down 8.2% in about a month, which isn’t fun at all.

So let’s have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business’ progress.

See our latest analysis for OUE

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

OUE became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

We don’t think that the 1.8% is big factor in the share price, since it’s quite small, as dividends go. It could be that the revenue decline of 11% per year is viewed as evidence that OUE is shrinking. That could explain the weak share price.

You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

    What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It’s fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for OUE the TSR over the last 5 years was -16%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

    A Different Perspective

We’re pleased to report that OUE shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 8.8% over one year. That’s including the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 3% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we’ve identified 2 warning signs for OUE (1 is a bit unpleasant) that you should be aware of.
